What is Coaching?

When most of the world thinks of a “coach” they think of a man screaming on the edge of field, encouraging his players to perform their best, run the plays that were planned, and guiding them with pivots as needed in real-time.

Life coaching is similar, but instead of a single game, it is the game of life in which we are encouraging, planning, and guiding.

Life coaches come in all sorts of categories: homeschooling, motherhood, business, healing, and on and on. Any area of life can benefit from having another person, usually someone who has been where you are, come alongside you, share wisdom, ask hard questions, and develop a relationship of trust so that you can benefit from what they have learned over time. What might have taken them five years to learn can be imparted within sessions by a good coach.

Coaching With Laura

I am a relationship coach. Any relationship that impacts your vocation of marriage I touch in my programs, as it all impacts our ultimate journey of sanctification.

I like to think of everything as a relationship. So when I look at a client and we talk about what is upsetting or frustrating her, I come at it by asking “what relationships are involved here?” And not only that, but what is the hierarchy of those involved? Because our relationships do exist in a hierarchy:

  1. Our relationship with God

  2. Our relationship with ourself

  3. Our relationship with our husband, if married

  4. Our relationship with our children, if so blessed

  5. Our relationship with our family of origin

  6. Our relationship with friends

  7. Our relationship with education

  8. Our relationship with time

  9. Our relationship with stuff

  10. Our relationship with food

  11. Our relationship with those outside our family (business, church, volunteering, etc).

There are probably even more areas to uncover.

Consider being locked in a dungeon (it’s been known to happen)

Now think of what relationships are left … God and self are always left. And because they follow us around everywhere, even into the darkest dungeon, we put them first. They also come with us into eternity. But what I realized is that while God and self are physically present, the other relationships are there in spirit as well. Even in the dungeon, all of these relationships matter and that inspires me to tend to each one in turn, especially as I am currently NOT locked in a dungeon and free to actually grow each relationship.

Coaching frees you …

It frees you from past wounds, limiting beliefs, anxiety, overwhelm, stress … because it teaches you to find and live in the present moment, considering all that is past in the light of God and all that is future in His Loving Hands. And when we do that, we get that peace and joy He promises.

Life is too short to live in the shackles of our mind, our misguided thoughts and emotions. God wants to free us, and He always sends us a life boat. And if THIS is your life boat, don’t be the man on the roof who keeps waiting for God to save him. Jump into the lifeboat, book a call, and let’s figure out how best to get you free!

There is no shame in needing a coach. What athlete has ever thought “I can play my best game all by myself”? Probably zero. They are wise enough to know they need someone to look out for blindspots, guide their training, and help them play their best game. Coaching is just the same. I’ll see you soon!
